Series 1: The Flat-Earth Incident
At a utopian commune in the West Norfolk Fens, Samuel Rowbotham conducted a series of experiments that led to a career as an evangelist for a bizarre cosmological system. His work inspired John Hampden to issue a challenge, offering £500 to any scientist to try to prove the rotundity of the earth. The naturalist and former surveyor Alfred Russell Wallace accepted the challenge, and in the end Hampden of course did not graciously accept defeat.
